On Tuesday 8th May, us Twickenham folk got the chance to meet the legendary (or soon to be) Anna Whitehouse aka Mother Pukka. Anna a wife to Matt and mother of two used to work for L'Oreal until she fell pregnant and upon her return to work requested flexible working only to be told that 'If it was given to her, they'd have to give it to everyone' (queue shocked/angry facial expressions!) Uh Ha!
The thing is L'Oreal from what I know has a predominantly female workforce so its pretty shocking in itself to ever be told that your request for flexible work should be based upon others needs, given that the company is practically ALL FEMALE at some point or another pretty much the majority of your work force will be putting in said request and what you gonna do, alienate everyone!!??
Anyway - Since then Anna aka Mother Pukka aka Maternity rights hero has launched her campaign Flexappeal, which is championing flexible working rights for everyone, hoping to bring about a much needed change in our society about the need, the right even, to have a work-life balance.
She's also written a pretty frank and funny book about 'honest parenting' called Parenting the shit out of life.
I was so chuffed to be asked to photograph this event, another successful one for the team at We Got This Sometimes - TW Why? well undoubtedly my love for all things photography, a night out out of course, chatting to like minded parents and my secret love for free flowing Prosecco! But more than that, the flexible working topic is very close to my heart having gone through my own dreadful experiences with a former employer.
I wasn't quite sure how I could help other women in similar situations but I knew I would try to, however small, in the end it all adds up to a big difference. Anna is my new hero and so whether it's you or someone you know going through a tough time at the moment I urge you to check out the FLEXAPPEAL campaign, we can all do our bit if not for you or someone you know then your children who will undoubtedly face the same issues unless we make this change happen. So help to spread the word by sharing this blog post.
Here are the images from the night.
